apparently the brits (thats british to you) tried their hand at funny skit TV programs around the same as SNL being on the air. the only difference? hmmm.... for one it is made by the monty python crew(this also includes the artist that had the "heart attack" in the holy grail. so you'll be seeing his crackpot annimations) so here is a link to a clip of my favorite skit...
